The Storming of the Dragonpit

Starving and furious, the smallfolk of King's Landing storm the great domed pit and kill the chained dragons inside with spears, hooks and their bare hands, dying in their hundreds to do it. The mob understands something the lords have missed all war: the dragons were never gods, only very large animals ÔÇö and there were fewer of them every month.

The fuller tale

Rhaenyra took King's Landing without a battle and lost it to arithmetic. The city had been fed by the Reach and the riverlands, and both were now on fire; the harbour was closed by the war at sea; and half a million people were hungry. She raised taxes to pay for a war they could not see and executed her way through the resulting unrest, and by the autumn a woman with a wooden sword was preaching in the streets that the dragons had brought the gods' anger and would have to go.

The Storming of the Dragonpit was not a battle. It was thousands of starving townspeople going up Rhaenys's Hill with spears, hooks, torches and their bare hands, against four chained dragons in a dark stone dome. The dragons killed them by the hundred. The mob killed the dragons anyway, because there were always more of the mob and the dragons were chained.

Four dragons died there in one night, along with somewhere in the region of two thousand people. The great dome of the Dragonpit cracked and fell in and has never been rebuilt; the ruin was still standing at the end of this chronicle, and something rather important happens in it.

What the mob understood

For a hundred and thirty years the ruling assumption of Westeros had been that dragons decide things. The smallfolk of King's Landing, who had never been consulted about any of it, worked out in one night that a dragon is a very large animal in a confined space and that a large enough number of people with hooks can kill one.

Nobody in the nobility drew the conclusion. Everyone else did. The Dance is the last war fought with dragons partly because they were spent in it and partly because a great many people had now seen them die.
