The Storm Kings (House Durrandon)

The Age of Heroes ÔÇô 1 BC

Durran Godsgrief married the sea god's daughter, and the gods have been trying to knock his castle down ever since.

The fuller tale

Storm's End was built seven times, the story goes, because the first six were thrown down by the storms that came for the man who had married Elenei against her parents' wishes. The seventh had a young Bran the Builder's hand in it, and it has never fallen ÔÇö not to storm, not to siege, and not to the two brothers who tried it in living memory.

The Durrandons ruled a kingdom that at its height ran from Cape Wrath up to the Trident and across to Massey's Hook, and spent the following centuries losing pieces of it to the riverlands, the Reach and Dorne. By the Conquest they held the stormlands proper and a great deal of pride.

Argilac the Arrogant answered Aegon's offer of alliance by cutting the hands off the envoy, fought Orys Baratheon at the Last Storm and was killed there. Orys took his castle, his daughter and his arms and antlered banner, which is how a crowned stag came to sit on a black-and-gold field for the next three hundred years.
