A cold island of woods and fisherfolk in the Bay of Ice, seat of House Mormont ÔÇö poor in gold, rich in axes, and stubborn beyond all sense.

The fuller tale

Bear IslandÔÇÖs Mormonts are Stark bannermen first and last, and whatever spears the island sends south during the Dance go where Winterfell tells them to go ÔÇö which, given Cregan StarkÔÇÖs long patience, is mostly nowhere until the war is nearly decided. The islandÔÇÖs own fight, as always, is with the sea and the ironborn who raid its coves whenever a distracted mainland gives them the opening; the Dance, distracting every mainland lord at once, is exactly such an opening.
