A cold island of woods and fisherfolk in the Bay of Ice, seat of House Mormont — poor in gold, rich in axes, and stubborn beyond all sense.

The fuller tale

Bear Island’s Mormonts are Stark bannermen first and last, and whatever spears the island sends south during the Dance go where Winterfell tells them to go — which, given Cregan Stark’s long patience, is mostly nowhere until the war is nearly decided. The island’s own fight, as always, is with the sea and the ironborn who raid its coves whenever a distracted mainland gives them the opening; the Dance, distracting every mainland lord at once, is exactly such an opening.
