The fuller tale

Braavos declines, as a matter of civic principle, to fight anyone elseÔÇÖs war ÔÇö the secret city built by escaped slaves has never had much patience for the quarrels of kings, dragon-blooded or otherwise. What it does instead is lend, and the Iron BankÔÇÖs ledgers make it a quiet party to the Dance whichever way the fighting goes: coin flows to whichever claimantÔÇÖs credit still looks good, and Braavosi shipwrights and merchants profit handsomely off a Seven Kingdoms too busy burning itself to notice how much of the rebuilding will eventually be owed to the lagoon.

The cityÔÇÖs deeper interest in the Dance is commercial rather than dynastic ÔÇö a war this destructive is bad for trade in the short run and extremely good business in the long one, and the SealordÔÇÖs court watches the narrow seaÔÇÖs chaos with the calm of men who have already worked out exactly which claimant will need Braavosi gold worst once the dragons are done dying.
