The fuller tale

Castle Black keeps its single vow through the Dance as through every other war: the Night’s Watch takes no side in the quarrels of kings, and the Wall does not care whose dragon wins the throne beneath it. The garrison in these years is thin and aging, as it usually is between crises, and the war down in the Seven Kingdoms registers here mostly as a disruption to the alms and conscripts the Watch depends on — lords too busy killing each other to spare men for the cold.
