The fuller tale

Held by House Mooton on the Bay of Crabs, Maidenpool sits along the road any army marching between the crownlands and the riverlands or the Vale is likely to use, and the Dance passes through it more than it happens to it — a supply stop and a muster point for forces moving toward larger battles elsewhere, its own declared loyalty to the crown a matter of expedience as much as conviction.

The town’s song-famous claim to fame — Florian’s first sight of Jonquil bathing — makes an odd contrast with the century it lives through during the Dance, when the roads it sits astride carry considerably less romantic traffic: soldiers, requisitioned grain, and the general nervous churn of a crownlands town that never knows which color the next company through its gates will be wearing.
