A wealthy Free City of canals and colored domes, where magisters grow rich and keep their daggers hidden.

The fuller tale

Pentos sits outside the Triarchy that gives the Dance its Essosi complications — Tyrosh, Myr, and Lys, not Pentos, are the cities that fight Daemon Targaryen over the Stepstones and later throw their fleets behind the greens at the Gullet, and the magisters of Pentos are content to let their neighbors spend the money and the ships on a quarrel that was never really theirs. Perfumed, comfortable, and characteristically averse to any fight it can avoid, the city watches the narrow sea’s war from a safe remove and does what Pentos always does with other people’s conflicts — trades with whoever is winning this week.

That said, Pentos’s magisters keep a weather eye on the Triarchy’s fortunes precisely because a defeated or diminished rival on its own doorstep only strengthens Pentoshi trade — the city has no dragons and no dog in the Dance itself, but it has opinions, quietly held, about which of its neighbors it would prefer to see humbled by the fighting.
