Two matched castles bridging the Green Fork, whose tolls have made cranky old Walder Frey rich and proud.

The fuller tale

Whichever Frey commands the crossing in these years holds the single most valuable piece of real estate in the riverlands, and does what every Frey since has done with it: waits to see who will pay best for the toll. The Twins bends, formally, toward Riverrun and the blacks, because the Tullys are its liege lords and the riverlands as a whole declare early for Rhaenyra — but a bridge that charges everyone who crosses it has never much cared which banner they carry, and the Dance gives House Frey ample opportunity to profit from both.

The crossing matters more than its garrison ever needs to fight to prove it. It is the one dependable way to move a large army between the North and the riverlands without a long detour, which makes the Twins the quiet, unglamorous hinge on which any northern intervention in the war has to turn — when Cregan Stark finally marches his host south, the Green Fork and the bridges that span it are exactly the kind of chokepoint that decides how fast a northern army can actually arrive, toll paid or not.
