Volantis
The first daughter of Valyria, sprawled across the mouth of the Rhoyne behind its Black Walls — a city of tiger cloaks and red priests, where slaves outnumber the free five to one.
The fuller tale
The oldest and grandest of the Free Cities keeps its attention on its own affairs through the Dance of the Dragons — the endless argument between its elephant and tiger factions over whether to march east against Slaver’s Bay or west toward glory matters far more to Volantene politics in these years than a Westerosi succession dispute the Black Walls have no stake in. Volantis lends the Dance nothing but distant relevance: the Rhoyne towns under its sway simply keep doing what Volantis tells them, war or no war, four hundred leagues to the west.

No death the chronicle records has come to this ground — or none the maesters have set down.
