Daeron Targaryen

Daeron the Drunken: Maekar's eldest, a soft, amiable man who wants nothing to do with swords or crowns ÔÇö only a full cup. His dreams, though, have an unsettling way of coming true; he dreamed a dragon fell at Ashford.

A soul of House Targaryen, born at Summerhall.

The fuller tale

Season One

In Ashford Meadow ÔÇö The Drunken: Maekar's heir, who dreams true and drinks truer. The princes of the realm arrive in force ÔÇö Baelor, Maekar and his sons: Aerion the Bright Flame, Daeron the Drunken, and somewhere unseen, a missing fourth son. The realm's future dies with him: the succession now runs through sickly Valarr, and the good years of Daeron's reign begin their long ending. Aerion is packed off to Lys, Daeron to a watch he'll drink through. And a hedge knight rides south for Dorne with a prince shining his kettle helm ÔÇö Ser Duncan the Tall, of no house, of the Seven Kingdoms.

Where they stand. Ashford Meadow.

How it ends for them

The chronicle records no death for this soul ÔÇö they are living when the tale leaves them, or their ending is a page the maesters have yet to turn.

Where the page and the screen part

Henry AshtonÔÇÖs Daeron rounds out the showÔÇÖs quartet of princes with the seasonÔÇÖs lightest touch, providing comic relief that the source material also leans on without ever losing sight of the characterÔÇÖs stranger edge ÔÇö the prophetic dream sequence, when it arrives, lands with more unease on screen than a simple drunkardÔÇÖs aside would suggest, matching the novellaÔÇÖs own quiet insistence that DaeronÔÇÖs dreams are not to be laughed off entirely.

Their journey

Where the two tellings send them to the same place the road runs whole; where they part, the screen keeps the left and the books the right.
