Acorn Hall is a snug forest keep in the riverlands’ southern foothills, seat of House Smallwood, a family whose chief historical distinction is a comfortable absence of historical distinction — no great feuds, no rebellions backed or betrayed, simply generations of minor lordship managed competently enough that the wider realm has never had cause to learn their name. In an age defined by the loud failures of prouder houses, Acorn Hall’s quiet, uneventful loyalty reads almost as its own kind of achievement.
