The fuller tale

Braavos is the Free Cities' best-kept secret even by its own account — a fog-shrouded lagoon city founded generations ago by slaves who fled Valyria's dragonlords and their fire, hidden behind the colossal bronze Titan that guards its harbor mouth from anyone who hasn't earned the welcome. Its most consequential export to Westeros in this era is not silk or steel but credit: the Iron Bank of Braavos has already built the reputation it will spend the next century trading on, lending to kings who need money and collecting, eventually, from kings who would very much rather it didn't.
