Casterly Rock
A fortress carved into a golden rock above the Sunset Sea, seat of the wealthiest house in the Seven Kingdoms. Ser Tybolt Lannister rides as a champion at Ashford.
The fuller tale
Casterly Rock is a fortress carved directly into a golden headland above the Sunset Sea, seat of the wealthiest house in the Seven Kingdoms and, by the smallfolk’s enduring account, once home to a family of Casterlys the Lannisters supposedly tricked or outlasted out of the mountain generations before any record can confirm it. The gold that funds the family’s legend still comes out of the Rock’s own mines in Dunk and Egg’s era, and House Lannister’s wealth buys them a presence at every great occasion the realm holds — Ser Tybolt Lannister rides among the champions at Ashford Meadow, one gilded name among many drawn to a tourney that briefly outshone even the West’s reputation for splendor.
In the first season
Ser Tybolt Lannister rides from the Rock to Ashford and holds the field as a champion — the lion's gold in a season that belongs to the dragons.
