The fuller tale

Maidenpool takes its name and its whole romantic reputation from a single scene out of the oldest songs: Florian the Fool first glimpsing Jonquil bathing with her sisters in the pool that still draws sentimental travelers to the town’s edge, whatever the truth of a jester who supposedly loved a highborn lady enough to become a knight for her. House Mooton holds the harbor above with the practiced ease of river lords who have learned, across centuries of passing armies and passing fashions, that surviving is a skill in its own right. In Dunk and Egg’s era the town is simply a working port on the Bay of Crabs — the songs older and gentler than anything the realm’s current politics have on offer.
