Moat Cailin

Ruined guard of the Neck

Three crumbling towers commanding the causeway through the swamps of the Neck — the ancient lock on the door to the North.

The fuller tale

Moat Cailin’s three crumbling towers command the narrow causeway through the Neck’s swamps, and though centuries of decay have reduced what was once a formidable First Men fortress to a broken shell, the ruin still does the one job that has always mattered most: it makes the North extraordinarily expensive to invade by land. The Andals never conquered the North in the first place, and historians have generally credited Moat Cailin and the crannogmen’s swamps around it at least as much as Northern steel for that unbroken record — an old lock, badly rusted, that nobody has yet needed to test seriously.

The fallen of this place — if any, they are named here. Spoilers.

No death the chronicle records has come to this ground — or none the maesters have set down.
