The fuller tale

Riverrun sits where the Tumblestone meets the Red Fork, its walls washed by two rivers on three sides, ancestral seat of House Tully since Aegon the Conqueror rewarded their early submission with lordship over the whole Trident — an inheritance that cost the older riverlands houses, the Blackwoods and Brackens among them, a status they have never entirely forgiven the Tullys for receiving instead of them. In Dunk and Egg’s era Riverrun functions mostly as the quiet fact of overlordship behind the riverlands’ noisier local quarrels — the ultimate court of appeal that houses like Blackwood and Bracken, Butterwell and Frey, answer to without the tales ever needing to show the answering.
