The fuller tale

Runestone is the ancestral seat of House Royce, whose armor — bronze, graven with runes older than the Andal invasion — is the family’s proudest boast and, not incidentally, physical proof that they were lords in the Vale before the Andals arrived to reshuffle everyone else’s claims. Where most of the Vale’s great houses trace themselves to Andal conquerors, the Royces trade on being First Men who simply never lost, and in Dunk and Egg’s era that ancient pedigree still buys them a respect at court that younger, richer houses can only envy.
