The fuller tale

Tumbleton is a market town on the upper Mander whose fields, two generations before Dunk and Egg ever walk them, hosted one of the ugliest reckonings of the Dance of the Dragons — a royalist army burned where it camped, and the survivors finished off by a plague so thorough the soldiers called it the Winter Fever rather than admit dragonfire alone had done the job. By the time the Reach's peacetime commerce reclaims the fields, Tumbleton has settled back into being what it was before that terrible season: an unremarkable stop on the Mander's trade routes, its worst history buried under decades of ordinary market days.
