Tyrosh

City of dyes — and exiles

An island Free City of bright-dyed beards and hired swords, where Bittersteel and the sons of Daemon Blackfyre wait across the water, and the black dragon's cause never quite dies.

The fuller tale

Tyrosh is an island Free City famous for the outlandishly dyed beards of its wealthier citizens and, less decoratively, for the hired swords the city has always been willing to sell to whoever's coin is heaviest. It is also, in Dunk and Egg's era, the natural home for the losing side of a civil war: Aegor Rivers, called Bittersteel, gathered the Blackfyre loyalists who survived Redgrass Field and built them into the Golden Company, a mercenary force with no country to serve but plenty of old grievance to spend on somebody else's throne.

From Tyrosh and cities like it, the black dragon's cause never fully dies even a generation after Daemon Blackfyre himself fell at Redgrass Field — his surviving sons and their partisans plot, recruit, and wait across the water for an opening, and it is exactly this patient exile network that eventually produces the Whitewalls conspiracy. Tyrosh's real export, in this telling, is not dye or swords-for-hire but a rebellion kept perpetually, expensively alive by men with nowhere else to go home to.

In the first season

Across the narrow sea, Bittersteel and the sons of Daemon Blackfyre keep the black dragon's cause warm — the shadow behind every uneasy peace of the age.

The fallen of this place — if any, they are named here. Spoilers.

No death the chronicle records has come to this ground — or none the maesters have set down.
