The fuller tale

Wyl is a marcher seat deep in the Boneway, old in border blood and home country to the very brigands hanged at Stoney Sept on Dunk and Egg's road to Whitewalls — a house whose relationship with the crown's law has, across generations of raiding the stormlands passes, run rather warmer toward its own outlaws than toward the crown's justice. Wyl produces knights and lords like any other house; it has simply never been especially embarrassed about the family's other trade as well.

• Near Stoney Sept, Dunk and Egg pass gibbets heavy with hanged men — Lord Wyl's brigands, taken by the king's men. The realm is uneasy: Bloodraven hunts traitors, and rumor says the black dragon stirs. Dunk turns their road north, meaning to winter at Winterfell. (TMK 1)
