Ned discovers that Arya has been secretly practicing with Needle, the sword Jon gave her ÔÇö the kind of infraction that would, in most highborn households, mean the blade confiscated and a lecture about proper ladylike conduct. Instead, seeing how much it matters to her, Ned does something unexpected: he hires Syrio Forel, the renowned former First Sword of Braavos, to teach her formally, treating her unusual want not as a phase to be corrected but as a gift worth cultivating.
It is one of the purest expressions of Ned Stark's particular kind of love ÔÇö not effusive, but attentive, willing to bend the rules of custom for a child who clearly needs something the rules don't provide. Syrio's water dancing, all balance and quickness rather than brute strength, is exactly suited to a small girl who will never win a fight on muscle alone, and the lessons that start here will end up being the single most consequential investment any Stark parent makes in this entire book.
