The First Sword of Braavos faced Ser Meryn Trant and five Lannister guardsmen with a wooden practice blade so Arya could run. What do we say to the god of death? Not today. He was never seen again.

The First Sword of Braavos met Ser Meryn Trant's armored guardsmen with a splintered wooden blade so his pupil could run. The last Arya saw, he was still fighting. The books never say what do we find if we go back.
The record says only this: he was last seen fighting. In the show, Meryn Trant and five Lannister guardsmen come for Arya; Syrio breaks the five with a wooden sword, loses it to Trant's steel, and faces the armored knight barehanded and smiling as his pupil escapes ÔÇö the scene cuts away, and the series never shows or states what followed, though Arya thereafter counts Trant as her teacher's killer and crosses him off her list accordingly. The books stage the same stand with the same silence afterward: the splintered practice blade, the order to run, the fight unfinished on the page. No corpse is ever produced in either telling. Every likelihood says an unarmored man with a broken stick died there; the story's refusal to say so ÔÇö unique among the first season's casualties ÔÇö has kept a corner of the audience insisting otherwise ever since. What is certain is what the site's ledgers record: last seen holding the door, teaching his final lesson, which was the first one ÔÇö not today.

Where the page and the screen part
Page and screen tell his story almost identically ÔÇö the books' Syrio is the same aphoristic Braavosi, his lessons rendered nearly word for word ÔÇö and they share the same pointed omission: no body, no confirmed end, a door the narrative closes without locking. The differences are ornamental: the novels give him the tale of how he became First Sword (the Sealord's cat, and the seeing that passed the test), which the show trims to its moral. His true divergence is legacy. In the books, Arya's later Braavosi journey keeps encountering his world ÔÇö the bravos, the water dance, the many-faced god whose smaller catechism he taught her ÔÇö and readers have theorized for decades about faces and identities the story might yet hand him, none of it confirmed. The show honors him differently, letting Arya cite him to the end.
