The purge reaches the Tower of the Hand: Syrio Forel holds the door with a wooden sword; Arya finds Needle and learns what swords are for.

The chapter retold

With Ned in chains, Lannister men and gold cloaks move through the Tower of the Hand rounding up his household, and Arya — out of her lessons and out of the way when the purge begins — very nearly doesn't escape it. Syrio Forel meets the Lannister guards at the door with nothing but a wooden practice sword against Ser Meryn Trant's live steel, buying Arya the seconds she needs to run rather than trying to win a fight he has no way of winning. She flees into the castle's underlevels, finds Needle where she'd hidden it, and for the first time uses it in earnest — killing a stableboy who tries to stop her, the first person she's ever killed.

The book is deliberately withholding Syrio's fate here — no death is confirmed on the page, only the sound of a fight left behind as Arya runs, and that ambiguity becomes its own kind of statement, a teacher who taught her that death is only another word for a very old story simply exiting the story without an ending written for him. Arya's first kill, meanwhile, closes the distance this book has been building all along between the girl who resented her sewing lessons and the person Needle is quietly turning her into.
