With Ned in chains, Lannister men and gold cloaks move through the Tower of the Hand rounding up his household, and Arya ÔÇö out of her lessons and out of the way when the purge begins ÔÇö very nearly doesn't escape it. Syrio Forel meets the Lannister guards at the door with nothing but a wooden practice sword against Ser Meryn Trant's live steel, buying Arya the seconds she needs to run rather than trying to win a fight he has no way of winning. She flees into the castle's underlevels, finds Needle where she'd hidden it, and for the first time uses it in earnest ÔÇö killing a stableboy who tries to stop her, the first person she's ever killed.

The book is deliberately withholding Syrio's fate here ÔÇö no death is confirmed on the page, only the sound of a fight left behind as Arya runs, and that ambiguity becomes its own kind of statement, a teacher who taught her that death is only another word for a very old story simply exiting the story without an ending written for him. Arya's first kill, meanwhile, closes the distance this book has been building all along between the girl who resented her sewing lessons and the person Needle is quietly turning her into.
