Word of his father's death and his brother's war finally reaches Jon at the Wall, and his first instinct is desertion ÔÇö to ride south and fight for his family regardless of the oath he swore only chapters ago. His friends among the Watch, the very recruits he once taught and protected, physically ride him down and drag him back rather than let him break the vow that binds them all, an act of loyalty to the order that costs Jon, in the moment, every ounce of gratitude he might otherwise feel. It's Mormont who finally offers him something to actually do with his grief and fury: not Robb's war, but the only war Mormont believes will matter in the long run ÔÇö the Watch is finally going to ride out in force, beyond the Wall, to learn exactly what's massing out there in the dark.

The chapter forces Jon's oath and his family loyalty into open conflict for the first time, and the book resolves it not by letting Jon choose but by having his sworn brothers choose for him, a humbling reminder that the vows he took so earnestly a few chapters back were never going to bend just because his own family needed him more than the Watch did.
