A Game of Thrones ÔÇö Catelyn XI

In Riverrun's great hall the lords debate distant kings until the Greatjon has had enough: ÔÇ£The King in the North!ÔÇØ ÔÇö and every sword comes out.

The chapter retold

In Riverrun's great hall, with Ned dead and Robb's captive host debating what comes next, the assembled lords argue themselves in circles about which distant king ÔÇö Renly, Stannis, or the crown still sitting on Joffrey's head in King's Landing ÔÇö deserves their continued loyalty, until the Greatjon Umber, out of patience with the whole exercise, rises and declares that none of those southern kings deserve a northern sword at all. He names Robb King in the North, and the hall erupts ÔÇö every blade in the room drawn and raised in the same instant, the assembled bannermen choosing, in one spontaneous roar, to break four hundred years of nominal Targaryen and Baratheon overlordship rather than keep pledging fealty to a crown that just executed their liege lord's father for treason he didn't commit.

It's one of the book's great crowd-scene payoffs, all the accumulated grievance of the last several hundred pages finding a single unifying shout rather than a negotiated settlement ÔÇö the North doesn't secede through careful diplomacy, it secedes because the Greatjon simply says the thing everyone in the hall was already thinking and dares them to disagree. Robb, fifteen years old and already carrying a captive Kingslayer and a war he never chose, now carries a crown as well ÔÇö an honor and a burden neither he nor Catelyn, watching from the edge of the hall, seem entirely prepared for, however inevitable it feels in the moment.
