Daenerys builds a pyre for Drogo, binds the godswife to it, and walks into the fire with three stone eggs. Dawn brings three dragons.

The chapter retold

With Drogo gone and the khalasar scattering ÔÇö Dothraki custom has no place for a khal too weak to lead, and a widowed khaleesi commands nothing among them without a living son ÔÇö Daenerys builds her husband a funeral pyre on the open plain, laying his body atop it with his weapons and his honor intact. Then, in front of Ser Jorah and the handful of bloodriders and handmaids still loyal enough to watch, she does something no one present has any framework for: she binds Mirri Maz Duur to the pyre as payment for the magic that killed her son and her husband both, and climbs onto the wood herself, carrying the three petrified dragon eggs Illyrio gave her as a wedding gift, and orders the pyre lit with herself still on it.

The watching Dothraki are certain they're witnessing a grieving widow's suicide, and even Jorah ÔÇö the one man in the world who has never stopped trying to protect her ÔÇö can only watch in horror, believing he is about to lose her. What actually happens as dawn breaks over the ashes is the single most consequential image in the entire book: Daenerys walks out of the fire unburnt, her hair and skin untouched by flame that reduced Mirri Maz Duur to bone, three newborn dragons clinging to her body and shrieking their first cries into a world that has not seen a living dragon in over a century and a half.

Nothing about the rest of this story is the same after this chapter. Every rule the book has spent seventy-two chapters establishing about power in Westeros ÔÇö that it comes from armies, gold, ancient names and old alliances ÔÇö is quietly rewritten by a girl who has none of those things and now, instead, has fire that doesn't burn her and three living proofs that magic has come back into the world. The Dothraki who scattered begin, cautiously, to return and kneel; the eggs Illyrio handed over as a curiosity turn out to have been the only inheritance in the whole book actually worth what it promised. Robert's small council spent chapters worrying about a girl across the narrow sea who might one day threaten the throne ÔÇö this is the chapter where that worry stops being paranoia and starts being prophecy fulfilling itself, on a plain in Essos, in the ashes of everything Daenerys had left to lose.
