The chapter retold
AryaÔÇÖs war starts as a costume change. Fleeing KingÔÇÖs Landing in YorenÔÇÖs charge, she has cropped her hair, taken a boyÔÇÖs name ÔÇö Arry ÔÇö and folded herself into a wagon of orphans, thieves and two chained prisoners bound for the Wall. It is a demotion she chooses on purpose: better an anonymous boy on the road than a highborn girl worth a bounty, and the disguise costs her nothing she isnÔÇÖt glad to shed, needlework and skirts included. Gendry, the armorerÔÇÖs apprentice with a face he doesnÔÇÖt know is royal, and Hot Pie, more baker than fighter, become her first traveling companions in a life that will run through a great many more.
What the chapter really establishes is method: Arya survives by disappearing into whoever sheÔÇÖs pretending to be, and the practice starts here, badly and out of necessity, long before Braavos gives it a name. The column creaking north is also the bookÔÇÖs clearest snapshot of what the war looks like from underneath ÔÇö not banners and battles but hungry children being moved like cargo, with YorenÔÇÖs rough decency the only thing standing between them and worse. Every name Arya will later add to her list has its grammar taught to her on this road.
