A Clash of Kings — Tyrion V
In the Guildhall of the Alchemists Tyrion counts jars of wildfire by the thousand and finds the count both terrifying and useful.
The chapter retold
In the Guildhall of the Alchemists, Tyrion is shown something that reframes the entire coming siege: jars of wildfire stacked by the thousand, the volatile green substance that burned half of King’s Landing during Aerys’s reign and could do it again several times over. The alchemists guard the recipe as jealously as any maester guards his chain, and Tyrion counts the jars with the specific dread of a man realizing he has just been handed both a weapon and a catastrophe waiting to happen.
The chapter plants the Blackwater’s eventual centerpiece long before the battle itself arrives — wildfire, hoarded and half-forgotten, is about to become the single most consequential resource in the city’s defense. Tyrion leaves the guildhall with a plan already forming, the first sign that the acting Hand intends to fight smarter than anyone in King’s Landing has fought in years.
