A Clash of Kings — Theon III

Winterfell wakes to find the ironmen inside its walls: Theon Greyjoy takes his foster home with twenty men, and Bran yields to spare the people.

The chapter retold

Winterfell wakes to find the impossible has happened — ironmen inside its walls, not through siege or battle but through Theon’s own audacity, walking in with twenty men and taking the castle he was fostered in as a boy. Bran, cornered and outmatched, yields the castle to spare its people rather than see them slaughtered defending a fight already lost.

It’s the moment Theon’s arc pivots from ambition to atrocity, and the book is careful to let the strangeness of it sit — a boy raised as a ward, who ate at this table and slept under this roof for a decade, turning his childhood home into a conquest with a force a fraction the size of its garrison. Bran’s surrender is the only sane choice available to him, and it will not save him from what Theon does with his prize regardless.

This movement: The Kraken in the Godswood

• Theon takes Winterfell with thirty men while its strength bleeds south; Ser Rodrik's rescue is betrayed by Reek.
• Bran and Rickon vanish; two miller's boys hang tarred above the gate in their place.
• A bread riot nearly eats the court; the High Septon is torn apart in the streets.
• In Qarth, the warlocks invite Dany to the House of the Undying; she walks out through fire with Drogon screaming.
