At Harrenhal, now Roose BoltonÔÇÖs, Arya has become the lordÔÇÖs cupbearer, close enough to real power to be genuinely useful and dangerous both. Jaqen HÔÇÖghar, having paid the last life owed on his debt, offers her something stranger than a favor ÔÇö an iron coin and the words that will open a door across the Narrow Sea, and then, in front of her, changes his own face entirely, proving what he is beyond any more argument.

Valar morghulis ÔÇö all men must die ÔÇö is the phrase he leaves her with, the first time the bookÔÇÖs most quietly enormous piece of worldbuilding surfaces on the page. Arya doesnÔÇÖt yet understand what sheÔÇÖs been offered, only that the strange, quiet killer who owed her three deaths has just shown her that everything she thought she knew about faces and names and killing was smaller than the truth.
