News that Winterfell has fallen reaches Catelyn at Riverrun, and she receives it the way she’s received every blow this war has dealt her family — at a distance, powerless to act, ordered to stay clear of the fighting by a son trying to protect the one parent he has left. Instead of a war council, she keeps a vigil at her dying father’s bedside, grief stacking on grief with nowhere productive to go.
The chapter is quiet by design, a held breath between disasters — Catelyn’s fear for Bran and Rickon has nothing to attach itself to yet, no confirmation of what’s happened to them specifically, just the terrible knowledge that the castle they called home no longer belongs to her family. Her father’s decline runs alongside it, one more Tully institution failing while the North burns without her.
