The search for Bran and Rickon turns up nothing but a cold trail leading to an abandoned mill, and Theon ÔÇö cornered by his own failed deception, unable to produce the princes he claimed had fled ÔÇö returns instead with two small bodies, burned and tarred beyond recognition, and hangs them from WinterfellÔÇÖs gate as proof that the missing Stark boys are dead.
They are not Bran and Rickon. They are two millerÔÇÖs children, murdered and disfigured to save TheonÔÇÖs authority in front of men who no longer respect him, and it is the single blackest act of his entire arc ÔÇö worse, in its way, than taking the castle itself. Winterfell goes quiet with a hatred that has nothing left of the old affection for the ward it once raised; whatever sympathy the reader has extended Theon up to this chapter, the book spends it here, deliberately and completely.
