A Clash of Kings ÔÇö Arya X
Arya takes a map, a knife, and two companions out of Harrenhal's postern; the Bolton guard at the gate learns what Needle is for.
The chapter retold
Arya finally acts on the resolve sheÔÇÖs been building since JaqenÔÇÖs departure ÔÇö she takes a map, a stolen knife, and two companions and slips out of Harrenhal by its postern gate, done waiting for anyone else to decide her fate for her. A Bolton guard at the gate, standing between her and the road, learns exactly what Needle is for when she puts it through him rather than being stopped.
ItÔÇÖs a small, brutal moment that closes out the Harrenhal chapters on a note of hard-won agency ÔÇö Arya killing not out of the listÔÇÖs cold ritual this time, but out of simple, immediate necessity, a girl choosing her own freedom with her own hands. The escape sends her back out into a riverlands still burning, older in every way that matters than the child who first entered the castle as a captive.
