A Clash of Kings ÔÇö Tyrion XV
Tyrion wakes maimed in a bed that is no longer the Hand's: his father holds his office, his sister holds the power, and no one thanks the Imp who saved them.
The chapter retold
Tyrion wakes from the Blackwater maimed and diminished, in a bed that no longer belongs to the Hand of the King ÔÇö his father Tywin has arrived victorious and taken the office for himself, his sister holds whatever power remains at court, and no one, not one person in the Red Keep, offers thanks to the man whose defense actually saved the city. His scarred face is a permanent record of a sacrifice the realm will spend the rest of the war forgetting.
The chapter is the bitterest possible coda to TyrionÔÇÖs Handship ÔÇö a masterclass in siege defense rewarded with demotion, disfigurement, and erasure from the songs that will inevitably get written about the battle he actually won. It crystallizes the bookÔÇÖs recurring argument about TyrionÔÇÖs place in his own family: competence without a sword-armÔÇÖs glamour buys resentment, not gratitude, and the Imp who saved KingÔÇÖs Landing gets to recover from his wounds essentially alone.

- Tywin is Hand and savior; the Tyrells bring a queen and a rose-colored future; Sansa is quietly set aside.
- Winterfell is sacked ÔÇö by Bolton men under Ramsay's flayed banner, not the ironborn; Luwin dies at the heart tree.
- Bran and Rickon split shadows: Rickon east with Osha, Bran north with the Reeds toward the Wall.
- The Fist of the First Men: three horn blasts in the dark, and the dead come with the snow.
