In the mountains Qhorin makes Jon keep his promise: Ghost's teeth and Jon's sword end the Halfhand, and a turncloak walks into Mance Rayder's camp.

The chapter retold

In the mountains, Qhorin Halfhand forces Jon to complete the hardest order heÔÇÖs ever been given ÔÇö the two of them stage a fight in front of the wildlings holding them, ending with GhostÔÇÖs teeth and JonÔÇÖs sword bringing Qhorin down, exactly as the Halfhand instructed. It is a death engineered on purpose, sacrificed deliberately to make JonÔÇÖs supposed defection to Mance RayderÔÇÖs cause look real to the wildlings watching.

Jon walks into ManceÔÇÖs camp afterward carrying clean hands by the letter of his orders and a black heart by every other measure ÔÇö he has just killed a man he respected, on that manÔÇÖs own command, to sell a lie about his own loyalties. Qhorin Halfhand dies exactly as he intended to, which does nothing to make the act easier for the man who had to do the killing. ItÔÇÖs one of the bookÔÇÖs clearest illustrations of what the Watch actually asks of the men who serve it ÔÇö not just their lives, but sometimes their honor, spent deliberately for a larger and colder purpose.
