Sansa Stark is cloaked in Lannister crimson before she fully understands what the color means, and is married to Tyrion Lannister in a ceremony sprung on her with barely more warning than she gets to object to it. Tyrion, aware exactly how little either of them wanted this and unwilling to make it worse, spares her the traditional bedding ceremony's public humiliation ÔÇö a mercy that costs him nothing politically and means everything to a girl who has had almost no say in anything done to her body since Ned Stark's execution.
What the marriage produces is neither romance nor cruelty but a strange, guarded truce between two prisoners who recognize captivity in each other. Sansa gains a husband who will not touch her against her will; Tyrion gains a wife who will never trust him, not because he has earned distrust but because trusting a Lannister has cost every Stark who has tried it dearly. Their silence together is the most honest thing either of them says all chapter.
