A Storm of Swords ÔÇö Tyrion I

Tyrion rises scarred from the battle to ask his father for his birthright; Tywin gives him the sewers, and a promise: Casterly Rock will never be his.

The chapter retold

Tyrion Lannister rises from his sickbed scarred, noseless and owed ÔÇö in his own accounting ÔÇö the thing he has wanted his whole life: acknowledgment, in the form of Casterly Rock, for saving King's Landing with wildfire and a chain while the men who get the songs were elsewhere. He goes to his father to collect. Tywin hears him out with the patience of a man who has already decided the answer, and gives him instead the city's sewers to administer and a flat promise, delivered without cruelty because cruelty would require caring: the Rock will never be his, not for this, not for anything.

It is one of the coldest scenes Tywin is given in the whole series precisely because he never raises his voice ÔÇö the refusal is administrative, a debt marked paid-in-full with contempt instead of coin. The chapter sets the emotional interest rate for everything Tyrion does across the book: every kindness he shows his family from here is collateral against a debt he now knows will never be honored, and every insult he swallows is compounding toward the moment, still chapters away, when he stops swallowing them.
