A Storm of Swords ÔÇö Arya X
So close to her mother that she can see the castle: Arya and the Hound circle the wedding camps as the feast begins, and the portcullises quietly close.
The chapter retold
Arya Stark gets close enough to see her mother's castle with her own eyes ÔÇö the nearest she has been to any Stark since King's Landing fell apart around her ÔÇö and still cannot simply walk in. She and the Hound circle the wedding camps outside the Twins as the feast inside gets underway, weighing how and when to make their approach, while behind them, unnoticed in the general bustle of a wedding night, the castle's portcullises begin quietly grinding shut.
The chapter is almost unbearable in retrospect for how ordinary it plays in the moment ÔÇö a girl watching a party she is not invited to, a mercenary calculating odds, gates closing that read, to anyone not already dreading the worst, like nothing more than standard security for the night. It is the last quiet breath before the book's most infamous chapter, and it spends every sentence of that quiet on borrowed time.
This movement: The Red Wedding
- Edmure weds Roslin Frey under the Twins' roof; the bread and salt are eaten; the music is wrong.
- Crossbows from the gallery, tent canvas cut over the feast outside, Grey Wind penned and shot.
- Robb dies with Roose Bolton's steel in his heart: "Jaime Lannister sends his regards."
- Catelyn opens her own face with her nails, and a Frey opens her throat. The North dies at a wedding.
