Arya Stark

The younger Stark daughter ÔÇö wilful, quick, happier with a blade than a needle. She named her direwolf Nymeria, for a warrior queen.

A soul of House Stark, born at Winterfell, sworn to The Faceless Men.

The fuller tale

Season One

Syrio Forel holds the door
Syrio Forel holds the door
Among the dragon skulls
Among the dragon skulls

The Stark who never fitted the portrait: better with a bow than her brothers, hopeless with a needle, and a collector of the names of people nobody else notices. Jon gives her a sword thin enough to use and her father gives her a fencing master, and Syrio Forel's water dance becomes the frame of her whole life. She is in the crowd at Baelor's sept when her father's head comes off, and she leaves the city that night with a shorn head among Yoren's recruits.

Season Two

The Gold Cloaks catch the column on the kingsroad and she buries a boy's name in the mud along with her own. Harrenhal makes her a Lannister cupbearer, close enough to Tywin Lannister to pour his wine and listen to him talk about legacies ÔÇö and Jaqen H'ghar offers her three deaths for the three lives she saved, which she spends badly and then brilliantly.

Season Three

The Brotherhood Without Banners sell her to the Hound, which turns out to be an education. He takes her to the Twins to be ransomed and they arrive minutes late, in time to hear the music change and see her brother's army butchered from the outside of it.

Season Four

The Children
The Children

North with the Hound through a country that has stopped pretending: the Vale, a fight at an inn, and a man she once knew from a list. When the Hound is beaten and asks her for the mercy of a quick end she takes his coin instead and leaves him under a tree, and buys passage to Braavos with a piece of iron.

Season Five

The House of Black and White wants everything she has in exchange for the power to be no one. She gives up her clothes, her possessions and eventually her name, and hides Needle in the rocks rather than surrender it, which loses her the argument before it starts. She steals a face to kill Meryn Trant, which was not hers to steal, and is struck blind for it.

Season Six

Blind and beaten in the streets until she is not. Offered the last of the bargain, she refuses it, takes Needle back out of the rocks, and puts out the candle in the dark. She comes home the long way, by way of a pie at the Twins and a hall of Freys with a cup in their hands.

Season Seven

Beyond the Wall
Beyond the Wall

Winterfell, and a sister she has not seen since the sept. Littlefinger works on the two of them all autumn with letters and hints and very nearly succeeds ÔÇö and then does not, in the great hall, where he learns which one of them was actually listening.

Season Eight

She is the smallest soldier in the war and the tale hands her the most consequential act of violence in it, in the godswood, out of the dark. Afterwards she walks out of a burning city on a white horse, tells her family what she has decided, and sails west of Westeros, where the maps stop ÔÇö not a lady, not a killer, not no one.

How it ends for them

The chronicle records no death for this soul ÔÇö they are living when the tale leaves them, or their ending is a page the maesters have yet to turn.

Arya IX Rain, mud and a swollen river: the Twins rise out of the storm, wedding torches burning, and something in the music makes even the Hound's skin crawl. Arya X So close to her mother that she can see the castle: Arya and the Hound circle the wedding camps as the feast begins, and the portcullises quietly close. Arya XI Arya reaches the Twins as the slaughter spills outward; the Hound's axe-flat puts her down before the camp can ÔÇö and that night she wears Nymeria's skin and finds a body in the river. Where the page and the screen part

Book Arya is younger ÔÇö nine when it begins ÔÇö and her Braavos chapters run deeper and stranger than the show's: the blind beggar Beth, the canal-cat Cat of the Canals, the Mercy chapter where she kills a name from her list while acting in a stage play. Everything after Braavos, though, is the show's invention. The published books have not brought her home; the Frey massacre, the Winterfell reunion and the godswood dagger have no book counterpart yet, and the Night King himself does not exist on the page. Readers know the girl; only viewers, so far, know the legend.

The show also pruned her companions and reassigned her encounters ÔÇö book Arya never serves Tywin at Harrenhal (her cupbearer duty is to Roose Bolton, a far colder room), never meets Melisandre, and parts from the Hound by leaving him dying rather than robbed. The Tywin scenes are pure invention and among the show's best additions, a writers' room finding gold in a pairing the books never imagined. Her wolf, meanwhile, matters more in the books: Nymeria leads a huge pack through the riverlands, and Arya wolf-dreams her way into it ÔÇö a thread the show reduced to a single roadside farewell.

Their journey

Where the two tellings send them to the same place the road runs whole; where they part, the screen keeps the left and the books the right.
