On a road going nowhere in particular, fever and constant rain wear down what is left of Sandor Clegane's strength, his untreated wound from earlier fighting souring by the day while Arya Stark watches him weaken with an ambivalence she cannot quite resolve. Each night she recites her list of names the way she has for chapters now, a child's grim prayer for vengeance ÔÇö and his name, the Hound's, is still on it, unmoved by however many times he has kept her alive since the Twins.
The chapter sits in that unresolved tension without forcing a resolution: gratitude and hatred occupying the same small camp, Arya neither forgiving Sandor for what he has done in his life nor able to fully wish him dead while he is dying in front of her. It is one of the quieter, more psychologically complicated stretches of her arc, letting the list itself become a character ÔÇö a running tally the reader is meant to keep watching as closely as Arya does.
