Arianne Martell's queenmaker plot reaches its bloody climax on the Greenblood: she spirits Myrcella Baratheon out of Sunspear intending to crown her under Dornish law, but the plan is betrayed and intercepted. Gerold Dayne — Darkstar, a dangerous and unpredictable Dornish knight — attacks the party with a blade, and Areo Hotah's longaxe answers in the chaos, but not before Ser Arys Oakheart, Myrcella's sworn Kingsguard protector and Arianne's own recruited lover, dies defending her — and Myrcella herself loses an ear to Darkstar's blade in the melee.

This chapter is the queenmaker plot's violent collapse, and it's built to feel like a punishment for good intentions poorly executed: Arianne's scheme, however politically sound on paper, gets a good man killed and a child maimed, and reveals that she does not actually control the Dornish factions she thought she was activating — Darkstar answers to no one's plan but his own. Ser Arys Oakheart, the honorable knight introduced falling for a cause he believed in, dies for a plot his princess never fully leveled with him about, closing his arc as one of the book's genuine, avoidable tragedies.
