Arianne Martell's queenmaker plot reaches its bloody climax on the Greenblood: she spirits Myrcella Baratheon out of Sunspear intending to crown her under Dornish law, but the plan is betrayed and intercepted. Gerold Dayne ÔÇö Darkstar, a dangerous and unpredictable Dornish knight ÔÇö attacks the party with a blade, and Areo Hotah's longaxe answers in the chaos, but not before Ser Arys Oakheart, Myrcella's sworn Kingsguard protector and Arianne's own recruited lover, dies defending her ÔÇö and Myrcella herself loses an ear to Darkstar's blade in the melee.

This chapter is the queenmaker plot's violent collapse, and it's built to feel like a punishment for good intentions poorly executed: Arianne's scheme, however politically sound on paper, gets a good man killed and a child maimed, and reveals that she does not actually control the Dornish factions she thought she was activating ÔÇö Darkstar answers to no one's plan but his own. Ser Arys Oakheart, the honorable knight introduced falling for a cause he believed in, dies for a plot his princess never fully leveled with him about, closing his arc as one of the book's genuine, avoidable tragedies.
