A Feast for Crows ÔÇö Brienne VII

The brotherhood without banners takes Brienne to a cave and a corpse-queen: Lady Stoneheart holds Oathkeeper to the firelight and offers a choice of nooses.

The chapter retold

The Brotherhood Without Banners ÔÇö once a company of loyal irregulars, turned by years of war into highwaymen and hangmen who dispense their own rough justice on empty roads ÔÇö brings Brienne and Podrick before their leader in a hidden cave. She sits hooded in the dark, a scar gaping so wide across her throat that no voice comes out of it, only a rasp the outlaws translate for her, and they call her Lady Stoneheart. Brienne knows her the moment the torchlight catches her face: Catelyn Stark, drowned at the Red Wedding and pulled from the Green Fork days later, brought back changed and wrong by Lord Beric Dondarrion's borrowed, dwindling life rather than by anything like mercy. Stoneheart takes Oathkeeper into her ruined hands, and the Valyrian steel ÔÇö reforged, unbeknownst to her, from her own husband's blade ÔÇö tells her exactly whose sword this now is.

The chapter detonates one of the book's most argued reveals: the North's grief did not end at the Twins, it simply changed shape into something that no longer recognizes mercy, kinship, or even its own children by sight. Stoneheart's price for sparing Brienne is not gratitude for the search but a blood debt ÔÇö bring back Jaime Lannister's head, or hang alongside whatever other 'traitors' the brotherhood has strung up in the trees nearby. It is a trap built entirely out of the very vow Brienne has spent the whole book keeping, now turned against the man who gave her the sword to keep it with, and it lights the fuse for the ambush still waiting at Pennytree.
