A Feast for Crows ÔÇö Arya I

The Titan of Braavos straddles the harbor; a copper coin and a word open the House of Black and White, where all men must serve: valar dohaeris.

The chapter retold

Arya Stark arrives in Braavos with nothing but a coin, a name ÔÇö Jaqen H'ghar's parting gift, valar morghulis ÔÇö and a list of enemies she recites like a prayer. The Titan of Braavos straddles the harbor, immense and alien, and Arya's arrival in the free city is rendered as culture shock: canals instead of roads, a language she does not speak, a girl utterly friendless in the most theatrical city in the known world. She finds her way, eventually, to a plain building with a door of ebony and weirwood, presents the coin, and speaks the password ÔÇö valar dohaeris, all men must serve ÔÇö and is taken in by the House of Black and White, the temple of the many-faced god of death.

This chapter formally opens Arya's apprenticeship among the Faceless Men, a religious order built entirely around the idea that death is a gift and identity a costume to be shed. It reframes her entire arc ÔÇö assassin's list, sword skill, the survival instincts hammered into her since Ned's execution ÔÇö as training she was already halfway through before she ever knew the school existed. The House's servants who greet her (kindly, opaque, unnamed) establish the order's central bargain immediately: everything is available here, at the price of everything she is.
