The Shy Maid drifts into the Sorrows, the drowned ruin of Chroyane where the RhoyneÔÇÖs grandest city sank into fog and plague centuries ago, and the crewÔÇÖs careful discipline finally cracks under real fear ÔÇö stone men, greyscale-ravaged and half-mad, drop onto the deck from the ruined bridge overhead. Tyrion, ever the one too curious or too reckless for his own good, ends up in the water and grey-fingered with contact before Griff hauls him out, the two of them both aware of exactly what that touch could mean.
The Sorrows are the bookÔÇÖs most haunted setpiece, a graveyard city that punishes the living just for passing through, and the chapter uses it to strip away whatever remained of the voyageÔÇÖs leisure ÔÇö this is not a pleasure cruise with an entertaining dwarf aboard, it is a fugitive party moving through genuinely mortal danger. GriffÔÇÖs reaction to TyrionÔÇÖs near-infection is sharper and more personal than the situation strictly requires, one more small, unexplained tell that this captainÔÇÖs stakes in the journey run deeper than a hired swordÔÇÖs ordinarily would.
