A Dance with Dragons ÔÇö Asha I

At Deepwood Motte the kraken's daughter reads letters from a broken home ÔÇö then Stannis's host comes out of the trees, and Asha Greyjoy is the king's prize.

The chapter retold

At Deepwood Motte, the ironborn stronghold Asha Greyjoy has held since her fatherÔÇÖs failed war, Stannis BaratheonÔÇÖs army finally arrives out of the trees where it has been massing unseen, and the castle falls with barely a fight. Asha, the krakenÔÇÖs daughter, sharp-tongued and formidable in her own right, becomes not a battlefield casualty but a prize ÔÇö a hostage of some diplomatic value to a king who needs northern allies more than he needs another executed Greyjoy.

The chapter reintroduces Asha after a long absence with her bravado intact but her options gone, reading letters from a home already lost to her uncle EuronÔÇÖs usurpation and now watching a southern kingÔÇÖs justice close over her too. StannisÔÇÖs decision to keep her alive rather than headless is itself a small character study ÔÇö a king whose reputation for grim rigidity keeps being complicated by moments of surprisingly pragmatic mercy, and AshaÔÇÖs captivity threads her story into the coming march on Winterfell whether she wants it or not.
