A Dance with Dragons ÔÇö Jon VI

The Watch garrisons its ruined castles with spearwives and raiders; grumbling officers count wildlings where Jon counts spears against the true enemy.

The chapter retold

Jon garrisons the WallÔÇÖs long-dead castles with the only manpower he actually has: wildling spearwives, raiders, and fighters his own officers refuse to call soldiers no matter how well they hold a line. The grumbling in the ranks has stopped being background noise and started sounding like policy ÔÇö men counting wildlings in the yard the way Jon counts spears against the only enemy that matters, and coming to very different totals about whatÔÇÖs being protected and from whom.

The chapter is quietly one of the bleakest in JonÔÇÖs arc so far, not because anything catastrophic happens in it but because it shows a leader doing exactly the right thing and watching his own authority erode for it in real time. Every wildling posted to a fighting position is one more soldier against the dead and one more grievance banked by men like Bowen Marsh, and the book is patient enough to let that erosion happen slowly, chapter by chapter, rather than in a single dramatic breaking point.
