Bowen Marsh

The Lord Steward of the Night's Watch, called the Old Pomegranate, a careful, cautious man who counts the Wall's stores and worries over every one.

A soul born at The North, sworn to The Night's Watch.

The fuller tale

How it ends for them

The chronicle records no death for this soul ÔÇö they are living when the tale leaves them, or their ending is a page the maesters have yet to turn.

Their chapters, book by book

A Dance with Dragons 1 chapter that name them

Where the page and the screen part

The show reduced him to a background face and reassigned his knife. On the page it is Bowen Marsh, weeping, who leads the officers of the Watch in the assassination of Jon Snow ÔÇö the fifth bookÔÇÖs final convulsion, driven by the stewards and the old guard, men whose grievances are institutional rather than personal. The screen gave that conspiracy to Alliser ThorneÔÇÖs bitterness and OllyÔÇÖs grief, faces the audience knew, and left Marsh unnamed in the crowd. The change trades the booksÔÇÖ chillier point ÔÇö that Jon is killed not by his enemies but by the WatchÔÇÖs reasonable middle ÔÇö for a more legible betrayal. Marsh has no death in either telling: he is alive in the published books, holding Castle Black in the aftermath of what he did, with Wun WunÔÇÖs roars and the free folkÔÇÖs numbers arrayed against the arithmetic of his survival.

Their journey

Where the two tellings send them to the same place the road runs whole; where they part, the screen keeps the left and the books the right.
