The Yunkish coalition sets up camp within sight of MeereenÔÇÖs walls, an army stitched together from slaver gold, borrowed sellswords, and conscripted Astapori slave-soldiers who are, unbeknownst to their new masters, also carrying the pale mare with them. Inside the city, DaenerysÔÇÖs council pushes hard for peace on any workable terms: open the fighting pits the old blood has been demanding, marry Hizdahr, endure the humiliation, and buy Meereen the time it needs to simply survive.
The chapter lays out the trap with total clarity ÔÇö every path forward requires Daenerys to compromise something she swore never to compromise, and every alternative gets more people killed for less certain gain. The plague riding in with the besieging slave-soldiers is the chapterÔÇÖs grimmest irony: an army meant to crush her freedom movement may do more damage to itself than to her, and the queenÔÇÖs endurance is being tested not by dragons or swords but by the much slower violence of a siege nobody inside or outside the walls can really afford.
