The chapter retold
At the Wall, Melisandre stares into her flames and sees fragments she canÔÇÖt fully assemble ÔÇö skulls stacked in snow, a grey girl on a dying horse fleeing something unnamed, daggers flashing in darkness. She dispatches a ranger on an errand the chapter keeps deliberately vague, a man who will travel wearing another manÔÇÖs bones and another manÔÇÖs name, chosen because his old identity is exactly the kind of camouflage the mission requires.
The chapter is pure atmosphere and prophecy, RÔÇÖhllorÔÇÖs fire offering true pieces of a puzzle Melisandre reads wrong as often as right ÔÇö she sees the girl in grey and assumes Arya Stark, not knowing the fugitive riding south under that name is someone elseÔÇÖs daughter entirely. The daggers in the dark echo straight back to what she already told Jon; the vagueness is the point, an oracleÔÇÖs warning specific enough to be useless until after it comes true, and the ranger sent out under a stolen identity plants a thread that will surface again at Winterfell.
