A Dance with Dragons ÔÇö Tyrion VIII

Storms cripple the Selaesori Qhoran and the sea takes half her crew's nerve; Tyrion mans a pump, argues with a priest, and the perfumed seneschal burns anyway.

The chapter retold

A storm nearly finishes what the Sorrows started, crippling the Selaesori Qhoran and shredding what little confidence the crew had left; half the sailorsÔÇÖ nerve goes with the rigging, and Tyrion finds himself working a bilge pump alongside men who a week earlier wouldnÔÇÖt have spoken to a dwarf unless mocking him. Amid the chaos, Tyrion trades barbs with Moqorro about fate and fire while the shipÔÇÖs perfumed seneschal ÔÇö a minor Volantene dignitary who has spent the voyage fussing over comforts nobody has time for anymore ÔÇö dies anyway, storm or no storm, proof that rank buys no exemption out here.

The chapter uses physical peril to strip away the last of the voyageÔÇÖs civility, putting Tyrion to genuinely useful work for possibly the first time since he fled Westeros and letting that labor do more to humanize him than any amount of clever talk has managed. The seneschalÔÇÖs pointless death is a small, almost throwaway cruelty, exactly the kind this stretch of the book specializes in ÔÇö reminding the reader that the road to Daenerys is littered with people who never mattered to the plot and died anyway.
